Soccer System in the UK
At British high schools, soccer is one of the most popular and important sports, leading schools to often field multiple teams per age group. These school teams compete in regional school soccer leagues, where they face off against teams from other schools in the region. For the top teams, the English Schools’ Football Association (ESFA) also organizes national competitions, where students from across the United Kingdom compete for national success.
Combining academic studies with competitive soccer in the UK offers a unique opportunity to both develop your soccer talent and advance academically—an ideal step toward a potential professional soccer career! For example, you’ll often play for your school’s soccer team on Wednesday afternoons, the traditional school sports day in the UK, or play matches right after school. You’ll also train several times a week after school.
Since soccer matches are mostly played between September and March, many students choose to join a school track and field or cricket team in the spring to round out their experience. It’s a unique opportunity not only to develop as a soccer player but also to become an all-around athlete or learn a new sport.
